Reliving the Past -V-

After Kilkenny our next stop was Waterford. Waterford will be remembered for what didn’t happen. Ben had booked us in a bed & breakfast……miles away from the center of town. We had a great view of the Irish countryside…..We were located on the main road from Waterford to Cork. When we first stepped from the train in Waterford our intention was to walk from the train station to the B&B, but Ben, always planning, decided to stop in a the tourist information center. Meanwhile I spotted a B&B right above a tavern in downtown Waterford. “Let’s stay there, ” I emplored. I knew it would be my kind of place.
Ben thought it over……and decided a commitment over the internet was a commitment…..so we started walking. Ben realized long before I did that the distance was too far……we knew before we started walking that buses did not connect with the B&B. Reluctantly we hailed a cab. TheB&B was nice if isolated. The purpose of the stop in Waterford was to meet Jackie’s sister Judy……Well we never accomplished this.
Instead we spent the day in the pub next door. Ben did not mind…..a fotoball game was always on the telly. One game was outstanding, but that was hohum for me. Constant phoning failed to reach Judy. The next morning the husband of the B&B offerred to drive us to the bus station for the next leg of our journey, Cork.
Cork was Ben’s favorite town in Ireland. A smaller friendlier version of Dublin without an international airport. We arrived on Sunday …..Market Day. Sections of the city were filled with vendors of all varieties. Just the spectacle of the market was enough to arrest our attention for some pleasant moments. Ben stopped for a sandwich at some fast food place, Quiznos if I remember. There he asked a young pretty (all Irish girls are pretty) lady for the directions to an internet cafe. Not only did the young girls give us directions, she led us through a maze of narrow streets and alleys until we came to the cafe…..a considerable distance from the Quiznos. Once there Ben engaged a computer. Again we were looking for a B&B. Ben didn’t commit this time, but he did succeed in locating the general area where the B&Bs were located. We left the cafe pointed in that location. In truth we took the first B&B we came to. We freshened up a bit then returned to the center of Cork.
